Biden’s visit to Ukraine draws criticism from conservative House Republicans

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden’s surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday drew a number of attacks from congressional Republicans, who criticized his support for the war-torn country and accused him of neglecting issues at home.

“You must stand in your country with East Palestine—an American city that needs your help,” tweeted Representative Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., in reference to the Ohio city. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes and raised environmental concerns.

The White House said Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine, a show of support and solidarity for the country battling for survival after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion nearly a year ago. But Republicans sought to use the images to highlight their issues with Biden’s presidency.

“When our border is in jeopardy, Joe Biden goes home to Delaware to nap. When Ohio Burns With Toxic Chemicals, Biden’s Admin Says Everything Is OK. So on Presidents Day, I am not surprised that Biden is betraying America over Ukraine. He betrayed America’s interests since the beginning of his presidency. They can keep it! tweeted Representative Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

Criticism of President Day, much of which came while Biden was still in a war zone, echoed Republicans, who have accused Biden of neglecting the US southern border and of bearing some responsibility for the war in Ukraine.

In January, Biden visited the US-Mexico border, where there has been an influx of migrants from Central America seeking asylum.

“So it takes two years for Joe Biden @POTUS To visit a war zone he has created on our southern border, but then he goes to see another war zone he has created in Ukraine,” Rep. Greg Murphy, R.N.C.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who also had a tweet Monday calling for parts of the US to isolate, said the conflict has become a proxy war between the US and China and must end immediately .

“US support for the war in Ukraine has been a US proxy war with Russia. But now it is becoming a US-China war through the Ukraine-Russia war. End it now!” Green tweeted.

During his visit, Biden stressed that the US would remain steadfast in its support of Ukraine, and announced an additional $460 million aid package, which would include more military equipment and weapons such as anti-tank Javelin missiles.

“Despite disagreements on some issues in our Congress, there is significant consensus on support for Ukraine,” Biden said.
